Season Wrapup:
The 2024-2025 St. Charles Cardinals Hockey season is now complete. The Varsity squad managed to knock off the Olentangy Braves 5-1 in the district quarterfinal on Saturday after going 0-2-1 against them throughout the season. Will Howard led the scoring with two goals followed by Hogan Mickey, Colin Hughes and John Vincent III with a goal apiece. Dylan Bell made 27 saves to get the win.
Sunday's semifinal matchup featured another matchup with Upper Arlington. After an early goal from Gabe Sotak in the first for SC, UA responded with the equalizer in the second period. That's all the scoring that took place until the fifth (!!!) overtime when Upper Arlington's Ben Spence netted the game winner! Goalie Dylan Bell made 59 saves in the 2-1 losing effort and matched the 1st team All-CHC goalie from UA (Mason Herndon) all game long.
Special shoutout to St. Charles defenseman Tommy Scharfenberger for being named 1st Team All-CHC and 1st Team All-Red Division for the 2024-2025 Capital Hockey Conference. Dylan Bell received Honorable Mention for his work in goal this year.
JVA put together a great showing in the JV State Playoffs held at Gilmour Academy. After a 4-0 win against Olentangy Orange earlier in the day on Friday, they dropped the night game versus St. Ignatius 6-1. The boys came back strong on Saturday and knocked off University School 6-2 before ultimately having to play St. Ignatius again on Sunday in the semifinal. An early deficit was too much to overcome and they lost 8-3, but up to that point no other team had put any goals up against St. Ignatius who ended up beating St. Edwards in overtime to secure the JV State title.
JVA had an incredible season winning the Capital Hockey Conference JV Red Division for a second straight year and finishing the regular season with a 13-1-1 conference record!
JVB was also up in Gilmour and played valiantly until their season ended on Saturday. Their Friday matchup resulted in a spirited 7-3 loss to Sylvania Northview. Saturday's games provided a true gauntlet in the form of St. Ignatius and Shaker Heights. An 8-0 shutout by St. Ignatius led to the last game of the season and JVB put all they had into a tight contest where Shaker Heights squeaked by 5-2.
The boys never quit and had quite the season themselves playing just as many games as the JVA squad and finishing second in their conference with an overall record of 16-10-3.
Thank you to all the players, coaches and parents for banding together and making our St. Charles hockey program as successful as possible while continuing to grow the game we share a love for throughout our community. Until next year, have a great offseason and as always – Go Cards!
