With Finals week in the rearview mirror, the Cardinals have reached Christmas break! Fortunately, that just equates to no school while the hockey season pushes forward at full strength.
The past weekend saw the Varsity team finish as runner-up in the Padua holiday tournament in Strongsville, OH while SC White and SC Red had two games apiece as well. Continue reading below for an overview of each game.
Don't forget the busy schedule (see below and the bottom of this write-up) for December 26 which features a public skate, Varsity game and alumni game back-to-back-to-back trifecta.

Varsity:
Just as finals wrapped up on Friday morning, the Varsity squad headed straight for Strongsville for their game against Walsh Jesuit to kickoff the Padua Holiday Tournament. A 54 shot barrage ensured that there was no lethargic travel day let down and the Cards enjoyed a 6-1 win even after the scoreboard was 0-0 after the first period. Dylan Bell registered the win in net while Jack Jensen (2), Jack Goodwin, Tommy Scharfenberger, Jimmy Zink and Will Howard all tallied goals.
Saturday featured two games with Dylan Fansler completely locking down University School in the morning with 39 saves and some spectacular defensive play that helped secure the shutout. Tommy Scharfenberger's goal 19 seconds into the game was all that was needed while Jack Goodwin and Will Howard also scored before Scharfenberger tallied his second of the game late in the third. For those counting at home, Fansler has played U School twice this year (counting the scrimmage on November 9) and not given up a single goal!
The late afternoon game saw a 7-1 victory in a matchup with St. John's Jesuit Titans. A flurry of goals including Harry Hadden (2), Simon Keller, Owen Shelley, Jack Jensen, Ben Nickey and Nick Sabol helped lead the Cards into Sunday's final. Dylan Bell earned the win in goal.
Sunday's final took place at noon against the home team – Padua. The first period ended up being a mess of penalties, penalty kills, power plays and some old-fashioned home ice advantages. Padua managed two goals in the first before St. Charles answered with a Tommy Scharfenberger goal on a power play of their own just before the period ended. Unfortunately, that was all the scoring that took place before Padua added an empty-netter with a minute left to make the score 3-1. Dylan Fansler held strong in net, but it wasn't enough to overcome a Padua team that held on for the win.

SC White:
SC White had an interesting game on Saturday as they faced University School, but without any authorized referees to be found. With two fill-ins refs, the Cards dropped the contest by a final of 3-1.
Order was restored the following day as the Cards' Leander Schearer blanked St. Ignatius 2-0 as Jake Zink notched both goals with assists courtesy of Simon Hurt (2) and Jake Saad.

SC Red:
SC Red finished finals week and had Friday off before heading north on Saturday to play two games against St. Ignatius Gold. The first matchup on Saturday afternoon ended in a 5-2 triumph. Sunday morning's game featured an even better performance that resulted in a 6-0 shutout. Great job boys!

Don't forget that the St. Charles Hockey Alumni Game takes place on Friday, December 26. Feel free to send this link to former players to have them sign up and play. The alumni game will take place at the Ice Haus after Varsity takes on Olentangy Orange @ 6pm with an expected start time around 8:00pm.
Before the Varsity Game, there will also be a Cardinal Skate that is open to future, current, and alumni families to come skate at the Ice Haus. Cardinal Skate will be at 4:50pm and end at 5:50pm.
