Varsity Cards Clinch the CHC Red Division Title With Strong Stretch of Play
1/5/2026

The calendar says it's 2026 and the Cardinals chose to ring in the New Year by playing three games apiece last week.

Last week I wrote that the upcoming schedule for Varsity featured quality matchups against Olentangy Liberty, Dublin Jerome and Upper Arlington. The Cardinals raised their level of play and managed to finish the week with a 3-0 record. As a result, congratulations are in order as they've already secured the CHC Red Division Title at this point in the season.

Read below for each of the three team's weekly recaps...

Last Week's Results:

Varsity

Playing a matinee on New Year's Eve day at Chiller North against Olentangy Liberty helped wash away the previous game's bad taste (1-0 loss to Olentangy Braves) when the Cards put up three goals before Liberty managed a shot attempt! Things only continued from there as the Cards blanked the Patriots 7-0 thanks to a hat trick +1 (4 goals) from Tommy Scharfenberger and goals from Jack Goodwin, Jimmy ZinkBen Nickey and a 27 save performance from Dylan Bell. Congratulations to Tommy Scharfenberger on reaching 100 career Varsity points with St. Charles Hockey!

On Friday, the Cards traveled to Chiller Dublin to faceoff with Dublin Jerome in a much tighter contest. After an early goal from Jimmy Zink, Simon Keller added a power play goal before Jerome jumped on the board with a power play goal of their own in the third. Harry Hadden increased the lead to 3-1 which is how things ended up after a furious rally by Jerome in the last few minutes failed to convert thanks to strong team defense and netminding by Dylan Bell (32 saves).

Sunday featured a matchup with rink rivals Upper Arlington at the Ice Haus. After a scoreless first, UA scored first before Jack Goodwin quickly responded with the equalizer. Harry Hadden netted a power play goal to give us the lead until the Bears tied things up near the halfway mark of the second period. Jack Jensen got the game winner when he made a beautiful play (video below) by entering the zone, found enough space to generate a shot and then raced in to deposit his rebound just over the pads of the UA goalie. Dylan Fansler (35 saves) and the defense withstood all the rest of the scoring threats and the Cards walked away with a quality 3-2 victory!

Next up: New Albany at 12:10pm at the Ice Haus on Sunday, January 11

SC White:

St. Charles White had an up-and-down week, starting with a loss to Dublin Jerome on Friday, January 2 by the final score of 4-2 at Chiller Dublin. The energy waned for most of the game and the Cards never really got going in this one, despite goals from Jake Zink and Simon Hurt.

The squad turned in a much better performance the next night in beating the Olentangy Braves 9-1 at Chiller North. Fritz Oberhammer led the barrage with a hat trick while Evan Korosec, Jake Zink, Evan Gough, Simon Hurt, Max Schmitz & Kellen Finegan all found the back of the net as well.

Sunday's game against Olentangy Orange at Chiller North – the first of three matchups over an eight day span for these teams – resulted in a 3-3 tie. Scoring for that game was courtesy of goals by Evan Gough, Evan Korosec & Kellen Finegan.

Next up: Olentangy Orange at 5:10pm at the Ice Haus on Saturday, January 10

SC Red:

St. Charles Red had an early week matchup with Dublin Jerome on Monday, December 29 and fought hard, but ultimately fell in that matchup 3-1 at Chiller Easton.

The boys celebrated New Year's and then turned in a commanding 13-1 performance against Columbus Academy on Saturday, January 3 (again at Easton) before turning around the next day and exacting some revenge on a different Dublin squad (Coffman) – taking that one 3-1 at Chiller North to finish out the week on a winning streak!

Next up: Worthington Kilbourne at 5:30pm at Chiller Ice Works on Friday, January 9
